The 27th edition of the Chianti Classico Collection closed its doors last week following a huge success in terms of attendance, with about 2,500 professionals from the sector, including restaurants, buyers and wine shops, and about 400 accredited journalists representing the sector’s press.
Chairman of the Consortium Giovanni Manetti summed up the Chianti Classico designation’s state of health for the press. 2019 ended on a very positive note for Gallo Nero: all the statistics are on the increase.
In economic terms, the increase started in the vineyards: a 10% increase in grapes for the 2019 harvest, and in the last three months sales of bottled wines have also risen by 10%. The driving force behind this are the two premium wines, Chianti Classico Riserva and Chianti Classico Gran Selezione, which together account for 42% of the market sales and 55% of the overall turnover for 2019. Gran Selezione alone earned 15% of sales.
“The key word for our 2019 vintage, and to open 2020, is ‘satisfaction’,” says Giovanni Manetti, Chairman of the Consortium. “Our family of producers is constantly growing (515) and we are closer than ever: we present a united front at events like this, not only sharing a trademark but also a planning strategy, closely linked to the area, and choosing quality throughout the processes. A clear indication of this is the rising number of producers joining the Gran Selezione project: in just one year the number has grown from 95 to 144. The real essence of this area and this designation is the commitment of all our winegrowers to a fine quality product: increasingly authentic and terroir-true wines, which reflect its multifaceted nature like a precious stone reflects the light”.
