The Drinks Business Green Awards is the world’s largest green competition. The jury of sustainability and drinks industry experts, chaired by Patrick Schmitt MW, aims to draw attention to green leaders in order to encourage the entire industry to follow their sustainable path. For this 11th edition, the jury acknowledged 11 categories, in addition to a special prize the Green Personality award.

Gérard Bertrand is Green Personality of the Year. The Green Personality award honours an individual who excels in furthering environmental causes by working to spread the word within their company and to a wider audience.

Gérard Bertrand also received the special commendations from the jury for the Best Organic initiative category which highlights the way he conducts all his activities with the aim of building a better world.

I am very honoured to be named Green Personality of the Year. For more than 30 years, I have been working and directing all of the projects in our vineyards in a sustainable and environmental performance dynamic, a dynamic we must make permanent. I am convinced that a viticulture in harmony with nature is the best way to create great wines and also the right way to demonstrate our deep consideration for nature. I aim for a positive impact of our activities and I am very aware of my responsibility as a winemaker towards the environment and the biodiversity. I am very pleased with this award, which demonstrates my commitment. Be the Change!

Gérard Bertrand owns 16 Châteaux and estates in the South of France. He began converting his estates to biodynamics early in 2002, starting with the Domaine de Cigalus. From then on, he aimed to acquire total mastery of this practice and convert his teams and all of his vineyards. Today, the promise is fulfilled since all the estates are now grown in biodynamics. A rare savoir-faire in a very wide space, since the vineyards extend over 880 hectares, spread over a diversity of soils and terroirs. Diversifying experiences increases the expertise, which makes Gérard Bertrand and his teams an international benchmark in biodynamics.

Furthermore, Gérard Bertrand created a research and development department to deepen the exploration of green methods. Gérard Bertrand continues to share his philosophy and his savoir-faire to change his region’s vineyard landscape. He has developed a specific unit to seal long-term partnerships over 10 years to accompany the winegrowers already committed to organic farming or while supporting growers shifting from their traditional methods to those more harmonious with nature. Partnerships overview in 2020:
– Since 2010, 40 partnerships with winegrowers in organic farming, 1,600 hectares
– Since 2017, 15 partnerships to accompany the winegrowers in the technical process of sulphite-free wines certification, 600 hectares
– Since 2018, 25 partnerships with winegrowers in conversion to organic agriculture, 600 hectares
– Since 2020, 800 hectares in partnership with agricultural farms certified organic and Bee Friendly
These partnerships provide producers with technical, organizational, economic and commercial support to achieve their projects.
A worldwide unique offer of Gérard Bertrand organic certified wines, with 6 levels of certifications (Conversion to organic farming, Organic, Bee Friendly, Vegan, Sulphite free and Biodynamic) is available for consumers. This includes the wines Change, Naturae, Solar6, Pollinat and the wines from Châteaux and Estates. Each wine is systematically accompanied by an educational effort that explains and presents the winegrowers’ approach.
